Spiritual Direction

All of us come to a place in our lives when we are not sure where to go next or we feel stuck in our current circumstances. Sometimes it is helpful to share what is on our heart, soul and mind to another person. We can begin to heal just by having someone who will listen and to help bring clarity as to what the Spirit might be inviting us to do next. We offer both individual and group spiritual direction. There is no set fee for this service. However, we do request you pray about donating to support the work we are doing.

Teresa brings 30 years of her own personal discovery, along with highly specialized spiritual direction training from the Shalem Institute located in Washington DC.  She is also a Certified Lay Christian Counselor.

Monthly Prayer Group

In a world of constant unknowns, deciding where to put our faith is crucial to maintaining our inner peace.  The Bible tells us to be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Praying supports our desire to deepen our relationship with our Lord.   Whether you are a beginner or a prayer warrior, there are many ways, waiting to be discovered, on how we can approach the throne of grace.

The First Church Prayer Group will meet the first Monday of the month beginning on January 7, 2020 from 7 – 8 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Williamstown in the Social Hall.  Each month, we will introduce a new type of prayer found in Richard Foster’s book, Prayer: Finding the Heart’s True Home.  The format of the meeting will begin with a brief lesson on a type of prayer and then we will spend time practicing the prayer.  After we have prayed, we will journal our experience and then breakout into small groups to share our experiences.  This will allow everyone to have an opportunity to teach and learn.

Richard Foster’s book has twenty-one chapters, so it will take two years to complete.  No meetings are scheduled for July and August.  A certificate of completion will be given to those who attend at least twelve classes. There is no charge to attend and all are welcome.  For more information or to register, please contact Teri Yerkes at 856-404-5704 or

2020 Book Clubs

The Christian Meditation Center is offering a new book club. Check out the details below!

Thursdays – February 27 – April 2, 2020 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at 368 S. Tuckahoe Road, Williamstown in NJ or join us via video conferencing.  This is a great opportunity to get involved with a small supportive group and to learn more about Christian meditation and how the practice deepens our love for God, ourselves and others.

We are excited to read Cynthia Bourgeault’s book, The Heart of Centering Prayer: Nondual Christianity in Theory and Practice.

Book Description: Centering Prayer is the path to a wonderful and radical new way of seeing the world.  It is not, as is sometimes thought, simply an act of devotional piety, nor is it simply a Christianized form of other meditation methods.  Cynthia Bourgeault here cuts through the misconceptions to show that Centering Prayer is in fact a pioneering development within the Christian contemplative tradition.  She provides a practical, complete course in the practice and then goes deeper to analyze what actually happens in Centering Prayer: the mind effectively switches to a new operating system that makes possible the perception of nonduality.  With this understanding in place, she then takes us on a journey through one of the sources of the practice, the Christian contemplative classic The Cloud of Unknowing, revealing it to be among the earliest Christian explorations of the phenomenology of consciousness.

Cynthia Bourgeault’s illumination of the Centering Prayer path provides compelling evidence of how important the practice has become in the half-century since it first arose among American Trappist monks, and of its maturation and refinement over the ensuring years of sincere study and practice. It will resonate with beginners on the Centering Prayer path as well as with seasoned practitioners.

2020 Christian Meditation Retreats

Spring Retreat – God Within You: The Case for Christian Meditation

Christian meditation is not a redesign of Eastern meditation.  It has been practices for centuries.  Christ Himself spent many hours in prayer and just being in God’s presence.  You will find this retreat will offer a compelling case for the practice that has changed the lives of so many people.

Christian meditation is a practice that brings us closer to God and by the grace of God, to be united with Him. It is in being closer, we find the healing we need and the power to overcome our old nature.

The retreat is scheduled for Sunday, June 7 from 1 – 4 p.m. at 368 S. Tuckahoe Road, Williamstown, NJ.  Join us for a time of learning and sharing. There is no cost to attend, however a love offering to the Christian Meditation Center would be appreciated. To register, please contact Teresa Yerkes at 856-404-5704 (phone or text) or email at

Fall Retreat – Come Closer: Discover Your Center

Most of us are familiar with the verse, “Be still and know I am God.”  But what most of us don’t know is the power that is found by just sitting in God’s presence and being still.  We will explore how meditation can provide you with the pathway for discovering the peace and calm within.

Our Fall weekend retreat is scheduled for Sunday, September 13 from 1 – 4 p.m.
